Baklava (recipe)

Baklava is one of the most famous and beloved desserts in the Balkans and the Middle East. This dessert is made from thin layers of dough, nuts, and syrup, giving it a distinctive texture and rich flavor. Here's how you can make baklava at home.

Ingredients:

  • 500 g phyllo dough
  • 300 g chopped nuts
  • 200 g unsalted butter, melted
  • 200 g sugar
  • 250 ml water
  • 200 ml honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 175°C. Butter a baking dish and place the first sheet of phyllo dough. Brush with butter and repeat with half of the sheets.
  2. Sprinkle half of the chopped nuts mixed with cinnamon. Continue layering phyllo and nuts until all are used, finishing with a layer of phyllo.
  3. Brush the top layer with butter and cut the baklava into diamond shapes. Bake for about 45 minutes until the baklava is golden brown.
  4. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved, then let it cool.
  5. Pour the cold syrup over the hot baklava and let it cool completely before serving.
