Brodet (recipe)

Brodet is a traditional Croatian seafood stew that combines various types of fish and seafood in an aromatic tomato sauce. This dish is often served with polenta or bread.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg fish (pike, sea bass, monkfish)
  • 500 g seafood (shrimp, mussels, crabs)
  • 2 onions
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 500 g tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 200 ml white wine
  • 100 ml olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • Salt, pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (parsley, basil)
  • Polenta or bread for serving

Preparation:

  1. Clean the fish and cut into pieces. Clean and rinse the seafood.
  2. Finely chop the onion and garlic. Blanch the tomatoes, peel them, and chop into cubes.
  3. In a large pot, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion and garlic until soft.
  4. Add the tomatoes and tomato paste, simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Pour in the white wine, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the fish and seafood, season with salt and pepper. Simmer over medium heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the lemon juice and chopped herbs, simmer for another 5 minutes.
  8. Serve hot with polenta or fresh bread.
